New CD from Robbie Kwock and Melecio
"Halad", the title cut, translates to "the offering" from the ancient native language of Melecio's nationality in the Philippines. This collection of Robbie's and Melecio's sextet with many of their friends, representing some of the best musicians in the Bay Area, is a special "offering" to all jazz enthusiasts.
Robbie Kwock's unique sound combines Latin jazz with Robbie's straight-ahead style in the manner of Miles Davis, handed down from Robbie's study under Johnny Coles, who inherited a strong influence from Miles. Co-leader Melecio Magdaluyo contributes several original compositions along with his versatility on alto, tenor sax, flute, and clarinet.
Joining Robbie and Melecio for this CD is a collection of some of the best jazz musicians the Bay Area has to offer, who all are personal friends of Robbie, and regularly work and play together in a variety of different groups and venues.
Featuring: Murray Low, Ron Belcher, Paul Van Wageningen, Calvin Keys, Jesus Diaz, John Calloway, Pete Escovido, Eddie Marshall, Jeff Chimenti, John Santos, Marc Van Wageningen, Al Bent, Deszon Claiborne, Josh Jones, and Wayne Wallace.
Just confirmed: Robbie and Melecio will appear on July 13 at Herb Wong's Friday night Summer jazz series in the new plaza in front of City Hall in Redwood City. The music goes from 6 to 7:30. You can buy food and drinks in the adjacent shops, or you can bring your own picnic basket and bottle of wine. There's a limited number of seats, so bring a low-backed chair just in case. And it's rain of shine, moving indoors when the weather is threatening. Don't miss the fun and the great jazz!
